Implant crowns are typically placed 3–6 months after implant placement, once osseointegration is confirmed by the dentist. A temporary restoration may be placed during the healing period for anterior (front) teeth for aesthetic reasons.

Cement-retained crowns are permanently cemented onto the abutment — similar to a natural tooth crown. Screw-retained crowns are secured with a screw through the top of the crown, with the screw access hole covered with composite. Screw-retained crowns are more easily retrieved if maintenance is needed. Your Boca prosthodontist will select the appropriate retention method based on implant position and clinical factors.

Zirconia and porcelain crowns are highly stain-resistant — significantly more so than natural enamel. They will not discolor with coffee, tea, or red wine the way natural teeth do. However, if you whiten your natural teeth after implant crown placement, the crown will not match the new shade of your natural teeth. Plan whitening before final crown placement if possible.
