Implant-supported dentures — also called overdentures or snap-on dentures — are full-arch dentures that attach securely to dental implants embedded in the jawbone, instead of relying on suction, gum adhesion, or adhesive pastes.
Typically 2–4 implants are placed per arch. The underside of the denture contains special attachments (ball, bar, or locator style) that snap onto the implant posts. The denture is firmly held in place during eating and speaking but can be removed by the patient for cleaning — making it easier to maintain than a fixed prosthesis.
Recognizing the signs early makes treatment simpler. Here’s what we look for — and the surest way to know is a quick exam with a Boca dentist.
Evaluate bone volume via X-ray/CBCT, discuss the number of implants needed and the overdenture style, and assess the existing denture (it can often be retrofitted).
Implants are placed under local anesthesia (sedation available), and healing abutments are placed.
The implants integrate with the bone. The existing denture is often modified for interim use.
Once osseointegration is confirmed, snap-in attachments are placed on the implants. An existing denture is retrofitted with the corresponding female attachment components; if a new denture is needed, impressions are taken and the final denture is fabricated.
The denture is snapped into place, and you are trained on insertion, removal, and the daily cleaning protocol.
The full process takes about 2–4 months, most of it implant healing (osseointegration), before the snap-in attachments are placed and the denture is delivered.
Dramatically more stable than conventional dentures — no slipping during eating or speaking.
The denture snaps securely onto implants — no paste needed.
The implants preserve the jawbone beneath the denture.
An existing denture in good condition can often be retrofitted — reducing cost.
Removable for easy daily cleaning.
A lower-cost path to implant stability than a fixed All-on-4.
A life-changing improvement in confidence and quality of life for lifelong denture wearers.
